Brad, On my last Degree i took Japanese modules 1-4 Which were all Extreemly challenging. You have to do the extra work big time and have to have very Good memory skills, as it is a difficult language to learn. You have 3 alphabets used for writing, on Kanji of which you will learn little consists of over 20K symblos.Hiragana (japanese character set) and Katakana(Japanese premierally used for western words) you will use extensively and niether bare any resembelence to traditional alphabets that wer are used to. Saying that Reading / Writing is only a small part of the elementary course, The Spoken part you will be glad to hear is quiet simple. Compared even to the more traditionally studied languages. Im glad i did the course as i comese in very usefull for surfing and in my line of work ( Shiguru Myiamoto dont speak English you know! ). I would reccomend it, however if you have a very challenging main subject then i would think twice as it can be more time consuming than other subjects.
